In 1971 Rallycross comes to the fore. Brian Peerce narrowly wins the championship in a works car from Ray HoughtonΓÇÖs Ripspeed Mini, and in 1972 BuncombeΓÇÖs Mini Cooper S shocks everyone by taking the 1300 cc title from Vince WoodmanΓÇÖs very fast, but unreliable Escort. In 1973 Special Car Saloon racing saw a new super class being introduced; this bought together many unusual looking hybrids including many Minis.
Throughout the rest of the 70s Mini saw itΓÇÖs fair share of racing and although competition was growing from cars like the Ford Escort and Lancia Stratos, Mini remained on the winning podium.
